Cahersiveen to Waterville. 20 miles.
Due to the weather and the warning that today was a long climbing hike across the mountain peaks, very boggy terrain, and little in the way of a rest stop , we decided to send our bags ahead by taxi to the night stop..We also cut out a few miles that would have been a back track from yesterday, didn't make sense in this weather to walk the same section again.
Very glad we did as the rain and wind persisted for a few hours until we were long across the first mountain of Knockavahaun which climbs to about 400 meters.
winds of about 70 miles an hour at the top
I found I was sweating a lot inside my rain suit, and the cold wind was cooling the sweat to the point I was freezing, with my hands out in the wind I started to get concerned as my core temperature was getting very low, and I was shivering. When that happens, your body burns up any stored energy you have a lot faster, and I got concerned, cause I was worrying about the distance to help if things went pear shaped.
The finger I amputated in this winter is still healing and the cold made if very painful.
The view was grand when we could look at it, but the wind kept whipping away at our faces when we looked up.
Going over a stile, I waited for the girls as I could see them having a jolly time, I wondered what they were so happy about. They walked up smiling and laughing like they were going to announce the birth of a new child, turns out they just figured out how to trail poop and not get any of it on themselves.
At last, we had a down hike into the valley and found a soft rock to sit on and grab some lunch before the next climb.
Feeling happier now, I was warming up and eating something
Round two was just as windy but the trail wasn't so boggy and full of mud holes.Kerry decided to tell jokes to pass the time and get her mind off the trail, Kerry tells bad jokes badly, Gigo where are you when I need you.
The last few miles, windy as they were, were a pleasure though. Looking over the town of
Waterville and the Bay of Ballinskelligs, plus the Lough Currane, was really pretty.
The sun was trying to peek out as we walked into town.
Tomorrow is short, so no hurry to get up and out too early
